Position: OSHKABAYWIS TRAINEE
Na-Me-Res (Native Men’s Residence), located in Toronto, is a diverse, multi-service organization. It offers a 65-bed men’s shelter, Tumivut, a 52-bed youth centre, and delivers a distinct package of outreach services to people who are homeless.
MAIN FUNCTION: The OshKaBayWis Trainee will be responsible for developing the knowledge required to design, facilitate and coordinate the delivery of culture based programs and services appropriate to the special needs of the client base.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
§ Develop a strong understanding of the client base including their special needs
§ In consultation with staff, research and develop programs and services which are appropriate and responsive to the special needs of client base
§ Oversee the community garden to ensure adequate supply of sweetgrass, sage, etc and coordinate the involvement of clients in the maintenance of the garden
§ Coordinate with counsellors the involvement of clients in all gatherings and ceremonies
§ Develop creative ways to encourage and ensure client participation in programmes and services
§ Coordinate bi-monthly traditional teachings by Elders
§ Other duties as identified by the Executive Director
SKILLS, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
§ A strong knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal tradition, culture, approaches, and history
§ Ability to develop and coordinate the delivery of traditional ceremonies including sweats, fasts, healing circles, teaching circles, etc.
§ Ability to develop and coordinate visiting elders program
§ Familiar with other Aboriginal agencies and organizations
§ Have a valid G2 Ontario drivers license with clean abstract
§ This position requires the successful candidate to provide a Police reference check as a condition of employment
