Life Skills and Counseling Workshops

At Na-Me-Res, we endeavor to provide our residents with the necessary tools required to develop a strong sense of self-sufficiency and self-worth. This is achieved through various programming and counseling services offered to every resident. Participation is conditional to their acceptance and continued residency. Upon referral, each resident is assigned a counselor who design a healing programme which currently includes workshops and counseling in the following:
  • One-on-One Counseling
  • Family Violence
  • Computer skills training
  • Street Help
  • Health and Sexuality
  • Men's Healing Circle
  • Arts and crafts
  • Traditional Values and Culture
  • Addictions
Each resident must attend two life-skills workshops per week, as well as one counseling session as part of his commitment to their recovery programme at Na-Me-Res.

In addition, the Alcoholics' Anonymous (AA) 12-Step Program was incorporated in 1997 into our regular and outreach programming. The weekly meetings are available to Na-Me-Res former residents, as well as current. By extending this service to former residents, we hope to diminish the sense of isolation experienced by some residents after leaving the hostel. This outreach service provides a sense of continuity and involvement in the community.

Crafts Life Skills Workshop

Our craft life skills workshop, held weekly, incorporates a wide range of Native craft making. Residents learn how to create many items, ranging from Dream Catchers to earrings.

The facilitator of this workshop guides the participants through a step-by-step process and ensures that by the end of the session, each individual leaves with the knowledge of how to craft a particular item. Should additional instruction be required, the workshop for that particular item will be continued into the following week's session. For those who have mastered the skill, the facilitator will offer instruction to a variety of craft making.

Residents who participate in this particular life-skills workshop look forward to it the first question asked of the facilitator is "So, what are we doing today?" This workshop provides residents not only with an opportunity to acquire a new skill, but also teaches them patience, focus, and the appreciation of the concept of process.

Men's Healing Circle

The Men's Healing Circle provides our residents with a weekly opportunity to discuss the challenges they face regarding:
  • Interaction with their peers
  • Family-related issues
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Healing one's self
Residents discuss many issues raised in our "Life Skills" workshops and attend the Circle voluntarily. Both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal residents are welcome. The facilitator of the Men's Healing Circle is usually a tribal elder, or a resource person from the community, such as a nurse or counselors. All possess experience and knowledge of Native teachings, healing and heritage and/or issues related to alcohol and drug abuse.
